Programming

PrintE-mail

At MidSouthCon we really take pride in our programming. We have an average of over 120 hours of programming in multiple tracks during the Con (and that's not counting the Video Room, Anime Room or gaming tracks). This year we are expanding our programming and will have more tracks than ever before.

Panels Presentations and Workshops

We will have panels or presentations on Science, Education, Space, Gaming, Fandom, Comics, Anime, Costuming, Movies, SCA, Art, Writing, and much more. We will post specifics as we get closer to the convention. If you have an idea for a panel that you would like to see at MidSouthCon, send your suggestion to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Educational Seminar

Once again MSC will hold a free mini-conference on education for Teachers Librarians and other interested scholars.

Anime

We will have an Anime Video and Programming Room, and are planning some very intersting panels and events.

Masquerade

Always a staple of MidSouthCon's programming, our judged costume contest has expanded and improved.

Midnight Dance Party

Once again we will have a Saturday Night Midnight Dance Party.

Filking

Once again we will have concerts and open filking -- come join in Fandom's own unique take on music.

Video Room

MidSouthCon's video room starts showing films early on Friday and runs 24 hours a day until late Sunday afternoon.

We show a fun mix of science fiction, fantasy, and other genre features, along with shorts, and other interesting stuff. And of course we have the traditional midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

If you have any requests or questions about our video room please feel free to contact us at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Kaffeeklatsches

Join the guests for our traditional Sunday Kaffeeklatsches (space is very limited, so sign up early).

The Darrell Awards

These Awards are sponsored by the Mid-South Science Fiction & Fantasy Association (MSSFFA) to promote literacy in the Mid-South by recognizing the best published local science fiction, fantasy, and horror. For more information check out the Darrell Awards home site.

Guests Banquet

Have dinner with our guests at an all you can eat buffet in the hotel banquet hall on Saturday.

Charity Auction

MidSouthCon's annual Charity Auction Benefiting SFWA Emergency Medical Fund and other good causes.

Signings

No Convention would be complete without autograph sessions with the attending guests, and we will have them scheduled at various times throughout the Con.

Children's Programming

The Children's Programming at MidSouthCon has been a great success, and once again we will have a dedicated Children's Program Room, with lots of neat stuff for children to do. (Note: Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.)

Sci Fi News

  • Borders Goes Beyond Books
In the wake of disappointing sales for the second quarter, Borders Group has announced plans to expand non-book products in many of their 679 stores. CEO Mike Edwards said, “We are taking steps to transform our retail model, in part through high-impact strategic partnerships, like Build-A-Bear Workshop, that enable us to offer a compelling mix [...]

Neal Stephenson & Greg Bear, with Subutai Corporation, announced the launch of their speculative fiction historical adventure novel The Mongoliad, released on PULP, Subutai’s new, interactive social book platform. The platform immerses readers into the world of the novel, letting them experience “meta-narrative” and “para-narrative” by inclusion of character sketches, videos, articles, short stories, music [...]
  • Black Library announces Hammer and Bolter
Gaming-related publisher Black Library has announced a new downloadable short fiction magazine, Hammer and Bolter, to launch in October as part of their new e-book publishing initiative. • The Speed of Time

“Light goes by at the speed of time,” Marlys once told me.

That was a joke, of course. Light can be slowed to a standstill in a photon trap, travel on going nowhere at all forever in the blueing distance of an event horizon, or blaze through hard vacuum as fast as information itself moves through the universe. Time is relentless, the tide which measures the perturbations of the cosmos. The 160.2 GHz hum of creation counts the measure of our lives as surely as any heartbeat.

There is no t in e=mc2.
